Editing in Harmony: Music Shaping the Rhythm of Work: Meet Priya Lal

You are an Edit Assistant. But what did you dream of becoming as a child?

As a child, I dreamt of becoming a famous musician. I’ve always had a deep connection with music, having played the piano for years. My musical background has influenced my work as an editor, particularly in terms of pacing and rhythm. I feel I have a natural instinct for when a cut should come in—much like how a musician intuitively feels the rhythm of a song. It’s that harmony between sound and visuals that truly defines my editing style.

What’s the most exciting project you’ve ever worked on, and why?

The most exciting project I’ve worked on so far has to be Love Island. I was flown out to Mallorca to work on-site, which was an incredible experience. Being part of such a high-profile, fast-paced production was surreal, especially knowing that millions of people would be watching the footage I was editing. The energy and collaboration with the team made it an exhilarating and rewarding project.

Which film or TV show inspired you to join this industry?

A lot of Quentin Tarantino’s films inspired me to pursue editing and storytelling. His unique blend of style, rhythm, and narrative always keeps me engaged. The way he plays with pacing and timing in scenes is something I try to incorporate into my own editing, creating moments that feel both intense and meaningful.

What’s the golden rule you follow as a freelancer?

As a freelancer, my golden rule is to always stay organised and maintain clear communication. With so many moving parts—especially on large-scale projects—it’s essential to stay on top of deadlines and expectations. Clients appreciate knowing they can rely on you to deliver without needing to chase you for updates.

What’s one thing you can’t imagine your workday without?

I can’t imagine my workday without my playlists. I love working with music in the background—it helps me stay in the zone and find a natural rhythm for my edits. It also provides that extra bit of inspiration to keep the creativity flowing.

What skill makes you stand out from other freelancers?

One of my standout skills is my ability to bring a musical approach to editing. My background in piano and music helps me with timing, rhythm, and pacing, which can significantly enhance the flow of a piece. I also pride myself on being adaptable and flexible—essential qualities when working across a variety of projects and genres.
