You are a freelance Producer. But, what did you dream of becoming as a kid?
I always wanted to be in a band or a successful musician, I play guitar and drums, and was in a few decent bands from teenage years onwards, but never “made it”! So then starting a career in the music industry, followed by advertising, and ultimately production was the next best thing.
What’s the most exciting project you’ve ever worked on, and why?
I think it would have to be an ad campaign I produced for a Jeff Goldblum jazz album (fun fact – Jeff Goldblum is a jazz pianist!). It was one of those where it all came together – we shot Jeff Goldblum in Palm Springs at Frank Sinatra’s house! I even got him to play piano on a platform in the middle of Frank’s pool in 45c heat. The talent, the crew, the location, the production all aligned perfectly and it was super fun. It was a dream one for a producer.
Which film/TV show/ad/social media campaign inspired you to join this industry?
Probably when I worked at Warner Music back in the late 2000s as a video commissioner, and being on set for various music videos at the time, it made me want to be more behind the scenes, hands on and work with directors and creatives to make a vision come to life (and stay on budget!).
What’s the golden rule you follow as a freelancer?
Overdeliver – someone is putting their project trust in you and have hired you for a reason, so make it worth their while. Not specifically overtime or anything, just where possible go above and beyond when you can. It also helps get repeat bookings!
What’s one thing you can’t imagine your workday without?
Laptop and phone. I am old school…in production stuff gets done so much quicker if you pick up the phone!
What skill makes you stand out from other freelancers?
Problem solving. I have encountered numerous instances where unexpected challenges or issues arise, either during pre-production or on set in real-time. Rather than panicking, I adopt a solution-focused approach, quickly moving into problem-solving mode. I then aim to identify the most efficient and effective course of action to ensure that the task or project is completed to the highest possible standard.
